Leader of the Islamic Republic
His Excellency Ayatollah Sayed`Ali Khamenei,
The Presidency, Palestine Avenue
Azerbaijan Intersection Tehran
Islamic Republic of Iran
Your Excellency:
I am writing again to express the concern of the New York Academy of
Sciences' Committee of Human Rights of Scientists regarding the rapidly deteriorating health of Manuchehr
Mohammadi, a student leader imprisoned for 10 years by the Revolutionary Court.
Mr. Manuchehr Mohammadi has gone on an indefinite hunger strike. He
continues to suffer from severe infections of his gums and other parts of his body. He is afflicted with kidney illness. In recent days, Mr. Mohammadi
has been transferred to the solitary ward of the Intelligence Ministry prison and has been subjected to duress and torture.
We are seeking assurances that Manuchehr Mohammadi is given access to
adequate medical care as provided by international human rights standards such as the UN standard minimum rules for Treatment for Prisoners (Article
22).
Thank you for your attention to this case. We respectfully await your
response to this matter of importance to our committee and to the International Scientific Community.
The New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, nonprofit, global
membership organization committed to advancing science, technology, and society worldwide. Established in 1817, the Academy is the oldest
scientific organization in New York, and the third oldest in the nation. It
is an international organization with nearly 30,000 members in more than 150
countries.
Sincerely,
Joseph L. Birman
Chairman, Committee on Human Rights of Scientists
