War is not the way to fight Terrorism!
All decent and civilized persons in the world are angry and sad at the evil terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001. The painful deaths of thousands of innocent people under an avalanche of fire, stone and concrete have saddened all decent human beings. The destruction of billions of dollars in property and the disruption of financial and economic institution have had adverse effects on many people and countries around the globe.
Terrorism, in addition to attacking and harming innocent victims, also tends to help reactionaries who use the fear in people to engage in war and other violent policies in their own interests and this way to take the control of the society. Therefore, those who use excuses such as "the US has engaged in oppressing other nations and has to pay for that," in order to justify heinous terrorist acts, only increase the power of the most reactionary strata in society. It is like justifying the use of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the use inhumane actions of Japanese military in the World War 2. We have seen the government of Iraq and the hard-line fundamentalists in Iran in their papers and in some articles in Internet advancing such arguments. We have to condemn these fallacious arguments and condemn terrorism in any shape and form.
The condemnation of the terrorist attacks on September 11 by the officials of the Islamic Republic regime in Iran was received with a sigh of relief by the Iranian people. The action of the Islamic Republic officials was due to their fear for their own personal safety, than any regard and concern for the Iranian people. If the fundamentalist regime had any concern for Iran and the Iranian people, they would have stopped their assassinations of Iranian people inside and outside Iran long time ago. The fundamentalist regime has been able to remain in power and suffocate the voice of the Iranian people by their continuous and unrelenting use of terrorism inside and outside Iran. Now that due to international public opinion, these fundamentalist terrorists have been forced to confess that terrorism is a crime, we have to make these fundamentalist officials to stand for the terrorist actions that have committed such as the assassinations of Dariush Forouhar, Parvaneh Forouhar, Mokhtari, Pouyandeh, Sharif, Davani, the mass executions of political prisoners, and the large scale assassinations of political activists inside and outside Iran by the government's death squads.
The declaration of war by the United States with vigorous support of reactionary sides and corners and moving the attention of severely emotionally hurt American people to it in a revenge attitude is neither wise fro American people and Government nor would it solve the terrorism. It would not be a wise policy if due to war more young Americans were to die than in the terrorist attack on September 11. On the other hand, in any massive and indiscriminate bombings, many innocent civilians would die in the region, and that could increase the appeal of world terrorists organizations.
The solution to the problem of terrorism is neither easy, nor there exists a shortcut. In order to solve the scourge of terrorism, we have to analyze its underlying causes and roots and work towards eliminating those causes. Continuation of political and economic injustice around the world constitute the origin of the causes of terrorism. Terrorism could not grow and flourish under conditions of freedom, democracy and economic prosperity. Therefore, in order to destroy terrorism in the world, we should help establish democratic forms of government, and work towards social justice. Destroying terrorism could not be done by waging war. War tends to help terrorism flourish.
Hence, in addition to condemning terrorism and similar heinous criminal acts against humanity, one should also condemn war and waging war to oppose and fight terrorism. The wise and correct policy for the United States and other developed countries of the world is to determine the roots of the terrorism and work towards the establishment of political and economic grounds to promote the living conditions of the people in deprived societies. |
